Chose 5 people you know well. These people can be co-workers, relatives,
neighbors, parents at the last PTA meeting, whomever you have the
opportunity to observe. List 5 characteristics for each individual. Focus on
physical descriptions, such as hair color or height, as well as personality and
behavior, such as short-tempered, compulsively neat or shy.
Study your list. Which of the 25 characteristics you recorded pop out at
you? Choose five or ten and develop a character who takes those behaviors
to the next level.
Don't be afraid to dip into your life for inspiration. Fiction is based on
someone's facts. Besides, isn't imitation the sincerest form of flattery?
(sorry for the cliche)

Memories and emotions are two of the strongest sources of creative
inspiration. We see creative storytellers utilize these two elements of
the human experience in songs, novels, television, and film. The story
that made you cry is the one you'll always remember. The story that
made you close your eyes and scream is the one you'll want to forget,
but wont be able to. Dig into your memories and your emotions. Use
an idea builder to brainstorm ideas surrounding your experiences.
